Pathological gambling: What are the boundaries of addiction?

Business No Comments »

Professor Marc Potenza, Yale University: “What are the boundaries of addiction – on pathological gambling”. A Stockholm Psychiatry Lecture held August 24 2011 at Karolinska Institutet. More lectures at http://www.youtube.com/psychiatrylectures
Synopsis:
Pathological gambling is currently categorized in the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) as an “Impulse Control Disorder Not Elsewhere Classified.” There has been debate in the field as how best to classify pathological gambling and other impulse control disorders, with some people viewing the disorders as obsessive-compulsive-spectrum disorders and others as behavioral addictions. The presentation will focus on data from the past decade that has prompted the DSM committees to propose moving pathological gambling together with substance use disorders into a category of addictive disorders. Specifically, epidemiological, clinical, genetic and neurobiological data on the relationships between pathological gambling and other psychiatric disorders will be presented, with a focus on the close relationships between pathological gambling and substance dependence disorders. Information on how conceptualizing pathological gambling and other impulse control disorders might inform prevention and treatment strategies for these conditions will be discussed.

Author, activist, and Project Director of the Food MythBusters, Anna Lappe takes on the billion-dollar business of marketing junk food, soda, and fast food to children and teens. With diet-related related illnesses alarmingly on the rise, pervasive marketing of junk food to kids is downright dangerous. The food industry says its up to parents to raise healthy kids. Lappe agrees, that’s why she says leave parenting to her–and the millions of moms and dads trying to raise healthy kids. Learn about the dubious marketing tactics of the junk food giants and the ways you can fight back to promote kids’ health.

Anna Lappe is a national bestselling author and a founding principal of the Small Planet Institute and Small Planet Fund. Anna’s most recent book is Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It, named by Booklist and Kirkus as one of the best environmental book’s of the year. She is the co-author of Hope’s Edge, which chronicles social movements fighting hunger around the world, and Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen, with seasonal menus by chef Bryant Terry. How to Access Research Articles for Free

The “Robin Hood of Science” continues to provide 60+ million scientific papers to anyone in the world for free at https://sci-hub.tw

Get the preface for Dr. Greger’s brand-new book, How Not to Diet, by subscribing to his free newsletter at https://nutritionfacts.org/subscribe.

Sci-hub.io was shut down since I recorded this, but the site can currently be reached at https://sci-hub.tw/ and five other domains. Should that one get yanked too (can always see the updated active link list on the Sci-Hub Wikipedia page(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sci-Hub)). Links provided for educational purposes only—literally!

But wait, isn’t illegal to download “pirated” papers? I explore the controversy in the thrilling conclusion of this two-part video series in Sci-Hub Opens Up a World of Knowledge (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/Sci-Hub-Opens-Up-a-World-of-Knowledge) up next.

My research into Sci-Hub came from a whole webinar I did on research techniques, which was captured into an online Continuing Medical Education course through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Check it out at How to be an Evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner (https://www.lifestylemed.education/Course/view/624278). I’m hoping to have a whole series of courses coming soon—stay tuned!
